Market Place Sutton
Retail activity distinctly peters off at the northern end of Sutton High Street. An eclectic collection of independent retailers near the station gives way to the blank facades of big box retailers and vacant shop units. An ambitious regeneration strategy delivered in partnership with Successful Sutton, Sutton Council and the GLA wants to see the area develop a new and distinct identity. Market Place Sutton, the new name for the northern end of the high street marks the beginning of a new era for Sutton high street. The entrepreneurs’ market has brought about opportunities for embryonic retail ventures. New artwork is transforming a series of alleyways linking the high street to the residential hinterland. A series of kiosk lanterns provide entry level retail space during the day and magical light patterns at night. Shopfront, signage and upper facade improvements give retail outlets a new lease of life. A specific colour palette which references the area’s historic lavender farms links the diverse design interventions. Trees and colour coordinated seating invite pedestrians to stay a while. Consultation was at the heart of the design process. A series of events invited the public to re-assess their high street and to take ownership.
